Manchester United will pay £10.5million (N5.2b) to keep Odion Ighalo at Old Trafford until January next year, reports say.
United extended Ighalo’s loan deal on Monday after reaching a new agreement with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
The Nigerian striker will be able to finish the postponed 2019/20 season with United and will stay in Manchester until the next winter transfer window opens.
Reports from the UK indicate that the Red Devils will continue paying £130,000 of his £300,000-a-week contract and splash out another £6m in loan fees.
Shanghai Shenhua were demanding Ighalo return to China and had slapped a £20m asking price on his head.
Ighalo turns 31 this month and United were reluctant to spend such a big figure on a player with a short shelf life.
‘In view of the uncertainty over the opening of the new Chinese Super League season and the uncertainty over foreign aid policy, Shanghai Greenland Shenhua and Manchester United have extended the loan for the Nigerian player Odion Ighalo.’ ‘It’s been a dream for him and hopefully, he can finish what he started and win a trophy with us.’ The Premier League aim to kick off Project Restart on 17 June with United in action that weekend against Tottenham in their first game back,” read the statement from United.
